Title: Business Officer – WA State

  • Travel to Seattle Corporate office 2-3 times per month
Reports To: Vice President of Business Services FLSA Status: Exempt - Administrative

Position Primary Purpose: Manage and maintain a positive relationship with a portfolio of business members and influence them to use a variety of the credit union’s services. Maintain a strong understanding of clients businesses and industries. Develop new profitable business relationships. Responsible for a portfolio of large businesses and/or complex accounts including managing and servicing intricate accounts and cannabis related businesses. Source business and commercial real estate loans as part of seeking out new business to achieve production goals and on-going satisfaction of business relationships. Provides superior service before, during, and after onboarding of new businesses. Maintains a positive, team oriented, working relationship with coworkers to provide friendly and efficient service to solve problems quickly. Relies on experience and judgement to accomplish goals. Requires a bachelor's degree in area of specialty or related area and at least 5 years of proven experience in the field. Has a strong working knowledge of standard banking concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.


Essential Functions


Use discretion and independent judgment in all areas of research, implementation, and administration, communication, screening, monitoring and reporting in the area of commercial lending and complex business accounts.


Ability to quickly learn and maintain a working knowledge of all computer software systems to ensure timely and effective delivery of services including: business loans, complex business accounts, remote deposit capture, on-line banking (including ACH & Wire originations), cash pick-up and delivery services, in order to manage members accounts and provide set up and training to new complex business members.


Manage the client implementation process by preparing contract and set up documents, schedule and track the implementation and training users of Business Services including current NACHA rules. Plan and lead activities such as: in-person demonstrations and set up of online banking and remote deposit capture. Refer to established vendors with revenue share agreements for merchant card services, payroll and HR services, etc,. Follow up with client post-implementation and communicate the implementation status to Vice President of Business Services, members and/or internal staff as required.


Prepare account analysis comparisons for prospective clients and present proposals for credit union’s business services. Perform some operational duties and account maintenance for Cash Management products and services to effectively resolve problems as they arise. Escalate problem issues in a timely manner for resolution.


Ensure correct and timely entry of account analysis billing entries for Cash Management services for your business portfolio. Review Cash Management analysis invoice statements detailing transactions and activities to ensure account analysis billing accuracy. Complete any I-502 compliance monitoring required on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis for business portfolio.


Obtain required financials and documentation from new (or existing) clients and providing current disclosures as required including NACHA updates.


Provide input to effectively manage Salal’s cash vault levels for cash management business members.


Maintain a high level of product knowledge and procedural expertise of the credit union’s product lines to cross sell.


Maintain a positive team oriented approach when working with co-workers to implement new products and services and to resolve and troubleshoot technical problems.


Assist with the creation and timely maintenance of client user guides, instruction manuals and procedures for intricate products and services.

Monitor vendor quality and performance to ensure a strong partnership and to ensure business member is not negatively impacted by a third party vendor; ensure vendor billing is accurate.


Keep abreast of current industry trends, identify potential enhancements to the bank’s current product offerings, and identify and help develop new business product/service lines that would benefit the credit union and its members.

The position requires predominant working from home and maintaining the confidentiality and security of member data. Travel to visit headquarters, branches and business members is also required throughout Southwest WA and Oregon. Outreach activities will include networking with professionals in the community and participating in local civic and cultural activities for the purpose of bringing new business clients to the credit union. Making service and sales calls, screening and negotiating loan deals, training, and performing other duties as needed to serve members and prospective members.


Complete all on-going education, training and professional development as required for position.


Comply with all state and federal regulations and compliance standards, including: Identify Theft Protection Plan (ITPP), Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Customer Information Privacy (CIP), Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) as well as Credit Union policies and procedures. Complete required compliance training.


Ensure required records are retained in accordance with the Salal Records Retention Program and preserved in a careful and secure manner.


Use network PC workstation/laptop to access core system and ancillary systems to perform account transactions, queries, and specialized functions for accounts as needed. Utilize all Internet service delivery systems and be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite to perform daily duties as needed. Operate and maintain department equipment and troubleshoot as needed in a positive manner with co-workers.


Non-Essential Functions

Perform additional duties as assigned and work with other departments and branches as required.




Position Qualifications

Previous Experience: At least 5 years of financial institution experience in a sales and business development capacity, prior product or project management experience and prior technical support experience. Familiarity with core servicing systems. Familiar with standard business banking concepts, practices, and procedures.


Education: College degree or equivalent work experience required.


Demonstrated Abilities: Business and commercial real estate lending knowledge required. Strong problem solving, organizational and time management skills; ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion to plan and accomplish goals; strong ability, desire and enjoyment in working with others as part of a diverse team as well as work independently; desire to serve and act in the best interest of the member and effectively manage commercial relationships; excellent communication and customer service skills with a high level of motivation and professionalism, whether over the phone, in person, or in writing; ability to work independently, set priorities and handle multiple tasks; dependable in completing tasks with strong attention to detail and accuracy; ability to safely drive a vehicle as evidenced by a driving record which reflects safety, experience and compliance with traffic law.


Physical Requirements: Sitting or standing continuously for periods of four hours, communicating verbally, communicating in writing, faculty of seeing and hearing and operating a keyboard. Lifting and carrying usually not to exceed 20 pounds.


Mental Requirements: Interpersonal interactions, problem solving, analyzing/evaluating, decision making, discretion/confidentiality, negotiating, math skills, teamwork, read/write/speak English, creativity and task handling.


Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office environment but also requires mobility within the office. Requires travel to other Credit Union facilities and various locations for meetings, sales calls and events.
