The Role

This position provides the opportunity to contribute to growth in a rapidly expanding company. Reporting to the Production/QA Manager, the Chemist will be responsible for lab maintenance and product analyses. In addition, the Chemist will assist the Production/QA Manager on key quality systems. The Chemist will ensure that quality control procedures are followed.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Works closely with Production/QA Manager and extraction staff on research initiatives and quality control improvement measures.
  • Receive, inventory, process and prepare raw materials used in daily manufacturing.
  • Prepare work space, equipment and materials daily.
  • Assist QA Manager for post-processing steps, including Purge, DeCarb, Winterize, RotoVap, Filling, Packaging, general lab work and sample prep for analytics.
  • Maintain lab process equipment and ensure such machinery operates in a clean organized environment.
  • Schedule and perform regular maintenance, cleaning, and repairs of all equipment.
  • Order necessary machine parts and upgrade equipment when necessary to ensure optimal performance.
  • Perform some administrative tasks, such as documenting all machine maintenance, making equipment orders, and improving or developing safety guidelines for equipment use.
  • Generation, interpretation, and management of analytical data.
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance of analytical instruments.
  • Maintain daily housekeeping routines and perform routine instrument maintenance.
  • May assist in internal auditing in collaboration with Manager, Quality Assurance and Production/QA Manager (CGMP, Sanitation, Safety and Quality Systems).
  • Prepare submission bench batches for preliminary approvals based on prescribed formulations and product specifications.
  • Ensure stability, and efficacy according to project requirements. Issue product specifications as required and maintain relevant data throughout each product's development.
  • Assist Production/QA Manager in Document/Change Control requests.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Biochemistry.
  • 5+ years of experience working in laboratory setting.
  • Experience working in the cannabis industry is considered an asset.

Skills, Knowledge, and Ability

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and competency required for this role:

  • Knowledge of GPP/CGMP (Good Production Practices/Current Good Manufacturing Practices) would be considered an asset.Must be knowledgeable of the operations and repair procedures of the equipment with which they work.
  • Ability to read and use schematics related to manufacturing equipment.
  • Knowledge of Occupational and Health Safety Standards.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

  • Incumbent will be working in a laboratory setting.
